Dr. Shailesh Kumar
Cheif Data Scientist AI/ML, Jio

Dr. Shailesh Kumar is currently the Chief Data Scientist (Executive Vice President) at the Centre of Excellence in AI/ML, Reliance Jio, Dean of the Jio Institute, and a Visiting faculty of Machine Learning at the Indian School of Business. He also serves as an AI advisor to central and multiple state governments, startups, NGO’s, and Universities. Prior to this Dr. Kumar worked as a Distinguished Scientist at Ola cabs, Chief Scientist and Cofounder of Third Leap, an EdTech startup, Researcher in the Google Brain team, Sr. Scientist at Yahoo! Labs and Principal Scientist at Fair Isaac Research. Dr. Kumar has 25+ years of experience in building AI strategies, platforms, and models in a variety of domains including Telecom, Retail, Finance, Healthcare, Agriculture, Education, Fleet Management, Manufacturing, Smart Cities, Energy, etc. using a variety of AI capabilities including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Speech Processing, Knowledge Graph, Natural Language Processing, and Generative AI. He has published over 20 international papers and book chapters and holds more than 35 patents in AI/ML. He was recognized as one of the top 10 data scientists in India in 2015, top 10 most influential Analytics Leaders in India in 2020, and 100 most influential AI leaders in India by Analytics India Magazine. He was also awarded the Teacher of the Year award from Indian School of Business in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Dr. Kumar holds a Masters and PhD in AI from University of Texas at Austin, USA and B.Tech. in Computer Science from IIT-Varanasi, India.
