Professor Rajendra K. Bandi, Chairperson of the Centre for Software and IT Management at IIM Bangalore, said: “India is rapidly emerging as a strong hub for developing software products for the global markets, and it is essential that the industry and academia come together to create an ecosystem to share knowledge and best practices and also to build a community.”

The second edition of the India Software Product Management Summit 2020 was co-hosted by the Centre for Software and IT Management at IIM Bangalore and the Intenational Software Product Management Organisation on January 17 and 18 at IIM Bangalore. The summit featured a wide range of Software Product Management (SPM) themes through keynote addresses, workshops and panel sessions by industry leaders, professors, venture partners, product and talent heads. Research paper presentations, mentor interactions, interviews and practitioner conversations were some of the additions this year.

The ISPMA extended an invitation to the winners to present their success stories at the global SPM Summit at Frankfurt, Germany in March 2020. The summit began on January 17, with the lamp lighting by Prof S Sadagopan, Director, IIIT, Prof Aboy K Ojha, Dean, Academic Programmes, Prof Rajendra K Bandi, Chairperson of CISTM, Hans-Bernd Kittlaus, Chairman of ISPMA, and Prof Haragopal Mangipudi, Adjunct Professor of IIM-B and Member of the Board of ISPMA .

The inaugural keynote by Prof Sadagopan set the tone and broader canvas for India’s software product aspirations, and the Business Leadership keynote, in the afternoon, by Sindhu Gangadharan, MD of SAP Labs offered insights on the next wave of business models for software product leaders. The business leadership panel, moderated by Prof Sadagopan, focussed on India as the Software Product nation in making. The keynote address, by Prof Payal Arora of Earsmus University, Rotterdam, underscored the significance of consumer experience in designing software products/platorms for the Next Billion users.

The Practitioners’ Panel on Innovation and Product Management, moderated by Prof Rishikesha Krishnan, focussed on the biggest challenges faced in driving innovation. It was encouraging to learn from the paper presentations that efforts are being invested into research, both in the industry and academic worlds. Prof Greg Coticchia, of Carnegie Mellon University, gave valuable insights on how prod mangers learn.

The panel on start-up and scale-up focus was moderated by SomShubro, Partner, Bharat Innovation discussed product management aspects for tech start-ups growing exponentially. The HR Leadership panel, moderated by Prof Gopal Mahapatra of IIM Bangalore, focussed on scaling the Product talent pool and the need for deepening and widening the software product management competencies and the means to achieve them.

With the several paper presentations by students, researchers and practitioners and four workshops conducted by Hans-Bernd Kittlaus, Prof Greg Coticchia from Carnegie Mellon University and Prof. Haragopal Mangipudi, the two-day summit provided a rich spread of activities with great learnings focussed on taking the Indian product management expertise to the global level and lead the world in this capability.

Hans-Bernd Kittlaus

Hans-Bernd is the chairman of ISPMA e.v. He is founder of InnoTivum Consulting. Prof. S. Sadagopan

Professor Sadagopan, Director of IIIT -Bangalore, is an alumnus of Madras University, India and Purdue University, USA. He taught for over 25 years at IIT Kanpur, IIM Bangalore, IIT Madras and IIIT-Bangalore, in addition to short teaching assignments at RUTGERS, USA and AIT, Bangkok. He has authored seven books, several book chapters and papers. He is a Fellow of IEE (UK) and Computer Society of India. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, ACM and AIS.

Prof. Rishikesha T. Krishnan

Professor Krishnan, teaches Strategy at IIMB. He was previously served as Director of IIM Indore. He has written 140 publications including the two books on innovation: From Jugaad to Systematic Innovation: The Challenge for India, published in February 2010, and 8 Steps to Innovation: Going from Jugaad to Excellence . The latter won the Best Book Award 2013-14 from the Indian Society for Training and Development. He has done double masters one from IIT, Kanpur and the other from Stanford University, USA. He is a fellow from IIM Ahmedabad. He is the moderator of the Leadership Panel.

Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Georg Herzwurm

Dr. Georg is the fellow member of ISPMA and has been a member of the Executive Board of the Business Administration Institute at the University of Stuttgart and heads the Chair of Information Systems II. Since 2018, he has been one of the founding members of the new research discipline on “Software-Intensive Business”, shaped at the Dagstuhl Seminar 18182. He is also a founding member and spokesman of the QFD-Institut Deutschland and Director of the International Council for QFD (ICQFD). He is also committed to supporting interested students who are interested in foundations within the initiative of the so-called EXIST start-up grants of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy.

Sindhu Gangadharan

Sindhu Gangadharan is SVP and Managing Director of SAP Labs in India. Sindhu joined SAP two decades ago, when SAP Labs India had just set up its operations in Bangalore. Sindhu has played a pivotal role in shaping SAP’s Integration strategy by growing SAP’s Integration product portfolio as Head of Product Management for SAP Cloud Platform Integration, IoT and SAP Process Orchestration. She has been instrumental in bringing to life SAP’s vision and strategy of the Intelligent Enterprise by orchestrating the end-to-end process delivery roadmaps to rapidly transform data into valuable insights for customers. She is a computer science engineer from Bangalore University

He has mastered new company/product launches, creating and communicating strategy for companies ranging from startups to billion-dollar industry giants.

Tech design for the Next Billion by Prof. Payal Arora

Payal Arora is a digital anthropologist and author, consultant, founder, editor, and professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam. She holds the Chair in Technology, Values, and Global Media Cultures. Her expertise lies in digital media experience and user values among low-income communities worldwide and comes with more than a decade of fieldwork experience in such contexts. She is the author of a number of books including the award-winning ‘Leisure Commons’ and most recently the “The Next Billion Users” with Harvard Press. She has a Masters in International Policy from Harvard University and a PhD in Language, Literacy and Technology from Columbia University. She lives in Amsterdam.

Sanjai K

Sanjai has a deep expertise in Software products with over 22+ years experience in enterprise applications. He is currently serving as Vice President, SAP ERP offering S/4HANA. He is also the member of ISPMA India mentor board. Prior to current role as the Regional Head of Asia Pacific & Japan (May 2010 – May 2016) was responsible for Business Acquisition, & Delivery of SAP Global Consulting services in APJ region.

Somnath Baishya

Somnath leads the People charter for Intuit at it’s Global Development Centers thereby enabling employees maximise their potential and help the organisation win it’s next phase of great. An alumnus of XLRI and IIT, Som’s prior career journey has been with Adobe, Nokia, Infosys and Tata Motors. He is one of the panelists in the event.

Tridib Roy Chowdhury

Tridib Roy Chowdhury has over 30 years of experience in starting and building software businesses for startups and large MNCs in India and USA with a history of 11 new global product launches and 80+ product releases and starting 6 successful product businesses and multiple patents. He is a B-Tech (Computer Science) from IIT-Kharagpur and has completed M.S (Computer Science- Intelligent Databases) from University of Maryland, College Park. He is currently enrolled at IIIT Bangalore as a full time research student pursuing another post-graduate degree and heads the MINRO COE @ IIITB, working on fundamental research in AI and robotics. He is also the Director of Products in Adobe Systems.

Venkatesh Balakrishnan

Venkatesh manages the Centre for Software Information Technology Management (CSITM) at IIMB. Holds an Engineering Degree from REC Trichy. Shankar is the associate professor of informations systems at IIM Bangalore. Prior to this, he worked as a consultant with Sapient Corporation, Cambridge and Reuters Consulting, Boston. Som is a partner with Bharat Innovation Fund. He was a board member and executive council member of Industry Body, IESA (India Electronics & Semi Association). He is an MBA from Wharton, University of Pennsylvania, and an engineering graduate from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and North Carolina State University. Sridhar is a product designer by training. His 25-year career spans consumer marketing, information technology and non-profit sectors. Skilled at product design, product management, marketing and technology innovation. He was the first designer at Infosys, designed India's first Internet banking application, setup Infosys's UX design practice, cofounded a big data company with award winning search and discovery products. Currently Sridhar consults to a Palo Alto startup on their UX strategy for a micro services testing automation product. His interest are UX for big data, digital platforms and AI-based solutions.

Sanjay is a partner at the Bharat Innovation Fund, which invests in early stage, IP driven companies. He is also the Chief Innovation Officer at CIIE, where he leads efforts to help create, promote, and encourage entrepreneurship in areas around digital technology. In this role, he leads the efforts at the Bharat Inclusion Initiative to bring more people into the formal economy, and workforce in India. Sanjay is also the founding chair of the technology committee, for the Modular Open Source Identity Platform - MOSIP - that helps user organizations such as Governments implement a digital, foundational ID in a cost effective way, while embracing the best practices of scalability, security and privacy harnessing the power of open source.

Sajit has over 24 years of experience and has played various Delivery, consulting, product management and sales & engagement roles in US, India, and the UK. He has been with Infosys for 20 years and primarily worked with Oracle, SAP and Finacle business units of Infosys where he helped clients drive value from large package enabled transformational programs in the Banking, Finance, HR and Supply Chain functions.
