Theory vs. Practice of Product Portfolio Management – views from real life of a major corporation

Have you ever discussed the topic of necessarity having a comprehensive portfolio Management for classical IT products, -services and –solutions? Or still more: Implementing that task?

This is my and my staff’s mission since end of 2021 – during Corona, big organizational changes and new working models like agile, scrum or right now SAFe. And we do not only conceptual work but also implementation and future operation, also Marketing for the products and starting to build up more quality in our processes.

This presentation shows why and how we want to do this, where we have issues and how we try to change this: Facing the challenges from an old traditional automotive company to a very modern innovate data-driven automotive software enterprise.

About the speaker:

Study of industrial economics from 1980 -1983 at the german “Berufsakademie” with Mercedes-Benz AG as training company and as one of the first students of this new apprenticeship at this time. After my transfer I had several jobs in HR, Research & Development, Finance & Controlling and IT, changing almost every 5 years.

Currently I am Team Lead of the Cross Functions Team having 7 members in the IT technology department for implementing Product Portfolio Management, Marketing and Quality Management for corporate backend infrastructure products and services within the organization “Dynamic Platforms & CDO”.

There we support Public Cloud Accounts and Connectivity Services, Software for developers with basic technology as Kubernetes Clusters and Digital Data Assets. Our boss is the Chief Data Officer of MB and joined us in January 2023.

As a new grouped center in November 2021 we are assigned to build up THE data ecosystem for Mercedes-Benz.
